Biodiversity Guidance

Your land management practices have the power to create healthy ecosystems. To better support Northeast farmers and maple sugarmakers in improving biodiversity on their land, Vermont Organic Farmers (VOF) and Audubon Vermont have created two sets of "best practices" biodiversity guides: one for maple producers and one for crop farmers.

Reading these documents will help you recognize signs of biodiversity and choose management practices that promote biodiversity.

Identify the different natural habitats on your farm, compare the characteristics of healthy biodiverse habitats against your land, and learn key management practices to improve biodiversity.

As a supplement to the "More Than Yields" guide, we've also created a small field guide that can be carried as you walk your farm to evaluate habitats and consider opportunities for enhancement. Physical copies are available at relevant workshops hosted by Vermont Organic Farmers (VOF) or the Northeast Organic Farming Association of Vermont (NOFA-VT), as well as other conferences and events around the state, while supplies last.

As a supplement to the "More Than Syrup" guide, we've also created a set of field guide cards that can be carried as you walk your woods to assess biodiversity and consider opportunities for enhancement. Physical copies are available at relevant workshops hosted by Vermont Organic Farmers (VOF) or the Northeast Organic Farming Association of Vermont (NOFA-VT), as well as other conferences and events around the state, while supplies last.
